The new Balans in Clapham: Review by Stephen Vowles

Boyz restaurant reviewer Stephen Vowles devours the delights of Balans’ newest addition down in Clapham.

There is an old adage: ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ and with the recent addition to the Balans Soho Society chain opening in Clapham this is exactly the case.

Inside the restaurant the decor is lovely, well laid out and has a distinctive charm to it that is very welcoming. The menu contains a wide range of dishes and the fact that the same food is available across all the restaurants makes for an easy selection process. Also the quality and quantity of dishes have been maintained, which is a wonderful thing to achieve where branding and consistency are important. After all you go to a restaurant to eat good food and if you have enjoyed a certain dish in one venue it’s a lovely thing to then enjoy the same dish again in a newer branch.

My dining companion and I opted for the monkfish scampi tales and samosas for our starters, followed by the melt in the mouth sirloin and green curry for the mains. The portions were generous and presented in a quirky manner, my steak came on a miniature chopping board.

Having recently rediscovered rhubarb the choice of the panna cotta dessert was easy and completed the meal beautifully. Easy drinking pre-cocktails and a very robust bottle of Malbec during the main course were our libations of choice.

Having a branch of Balans Soho Society south of the river has firmly put the restaurant group on the map and is well worth a trip.
