Macbeth is one of Shakespeare’s most famous works and now the AC Group has produced its version at the Brockley Jack Theatre, as co-artistic director Thomas Attwood explains.
How would you describe this version of Macbeth?
I hope that audiences will find our version of Macbeth thrilling, romantic and bloodthirsty.
How is it different to other versions people may have seen?
We haven’t actively tried to create a ‘different’ version, so to speak, but I was very keen from the start to explore how we could use expressive movement and live music to tell the story. Our movement director, Roman Berry, specialises in Butoh, which is a form of Japanese dance theatre, so this production has a very unique style. And we’re fortunate to have an exceptionally talented and diverse cast of actors and musicians who can all do wonderful things with their voices, bodies and instruments.
Why do you think the play has stood the test of time?
As with Shakespeare’s other plays, I think what amazes each generation of theatregoers is how timeless their themes are. Especially in light of today’s turbulent world, I hope audiences will be able to discover the relevance of Macbeth afresh, whether it’s their first or fiftieth time seeing it.
