Chinese Whispers is the play based on the story of Edmund Backhouse, a 19th century international-level con man and outrageous homosexual. It’s at the Greenwich Theatre from next Thursday (13 Jul) until 23 July. Producer Pete Shaw told us: “Backhouse is an anti-hero with a gentleman’s charm, whose wit and quick-thinking got him through the most audacious of swindles.” The story features intrigue, scandal, an affair with the 70 year old Chinese Empress and visits to gay brothels.
